Beating Liverpool At Anfield : Chelsea Flies Alone On The Top Of The League

Having watched his team set a new club record of 17 games unbeaten in all competitions at the start of a season and continue to set the pace in the title race, Jose Mourinho spoke afterwards of a happy camp.

Liverpool may have taken an early lead in the early game with a deflected shot, but at the same end of Anfield as the infamous ‘ghost goal’ to Liverpool in our Champions League meeting in 2005, this time goal-line technology was available to rule in Chelsea favour when Simon Mignolet in the home goal could not quite keep out Gary Cahill’s shot.
Diego Costa added to that equaliser in the second half for a rapid 10 goals in nine league appearances for the striker, and a third win in a row over the Merseysiders was ours.
Mourinho had remained unconcerned during the five first-half minutes his team trailed…
‘Of course we want to go in front but I am not afraid to go behind because the team is very stable, very confident,’ he explained.
‘A goal against doesn’t stop the team playing. When Liverpool scored it was not a drama for me or the team and they kept playing well. We had two or three good chances before we scored, and in the second half from minute one until we scored the second goal, it was a fantastic expression of ambition and self-belief.
‘My team didn’t accept a point as a good result. Obviously it is three important points and a case of when the best team won. A fantastic performance.’

Mourinho broke from the norm to highlight some individual performances without being asked to. He had a particular reason to do so...
‘Every player was fantastic and some were absolutely brilliant but Ramires and Fabregas both played injured. Maybe the team will lose them for a match or two now but they put themselves there for the team, like I am sure others will in the future because the spirit of the team is fantastic.
‘Fabregas has a hamstring injury, Ramires is the same thing [groin] as before but he knew for my plan it was important for him to start the game. Fabregas is a fantastic professional and he gambled and I gambled. He can join up with Spain but if he does he will be back.’

The fitness of winning goalscorer Diego Costa is moving in the right direction however…
‘He is back. Maybe the injury was good because it made him stop, and when he has to stop he had time to recover step by step. In this moment he is in good condition and Spain made a fantastic decision for them and for us. Now he has 15 days to be at the top of his game and when Spain needs him they will have a good Diego, not a bad Diego.’

Mourinho concluded by looking at the league campaign 11 games in…

‘We are in a good situation where we have played two matches in Liverpool and two in Manchester - four very difficult matches away, but it’s the beginning of November and there is a long way to go.
‘It is a good start and I believe my team can keep this stability. One day we will lose and the next game we will win again. I know the negative moment will arrive and we are prepared for that.
‘We believe also in the players who are not playing so much, they are ready to give to the team, and we believe in the medical department. They did fantastic this week with Diego but especially with Fabregas and Ramires, and we believe in everything at the moment. We are a happy camp.’

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was satisfied with his team’s showing apart from when it came to finding the final pass. He also commented on Chelsea.
‘They look very strong, with a very experienced squad and they have added quality and experience in the summer. They look the strongest team at the moment.’
